Hey all, and welcome to September’s astrology forecast!

Let me start by saying this: August’s astrology was kind of a shit show. I don’t want to re-hash it too much (mostly because I’m trying to forget about it altogether), but a Mercury retrograde, a Mars-Saturn and Jupiter-Saturn square all crammed into one month was a lot to handle, so if you’re still recovering from all of August’s drama, that’s totally understandable. As for myself, I am writing this from the comfort of a neck pillow, because I injured myself over the weekend (long story). Injuries and physical ailments have been more of theme for me since Mars entered Gemini (my twelfth house), but lucky for myself and all of the other Cancer & Capricorn risings out there, Mars will be changing signs on September 4 and moving into Cancer.

The major transits taking place in September 2024:

  • Virgo new moon at 11 degrees (September 2)

  • Mars enters Cancer (September 4)

  • Pisces lunar eclipse at 17 degrees (September 17)

  • Libra season begins (September 22)

  • Sun-Mercury cazimi in Libra at 8 degrees (September 30)

Now, I can’t lie — Mars in Cancer isn’t going to be all sunshines and rainbows, especially for Leo, Sagittarius, and Aquarius risings. Mars is considered to be fallen in Cancer, meaning that it is in the sign opposite its exaltation (Capricorn) and more prone to do harm due to the lack of helpful resources found in this Moon-ruled sign. Cancer is a moody, receptive sign that is driven by the ebbs and flows of one’s emotional state. Here, Mars is quick to act, since Cancer is a cardinal sign — but is driven more by feelings than anything else, since this is also a water sign — which can be a bit problematic. During this Mars transit, I *highly* recommend keeping your impulses in check. Lashing out emotionally is a major signature of this transit, and while feelings are temporary, sometimes the consequences are not. You may feel more of a need to defend yourself and your family while Mars is here, and your gut instincts will probably be your main driving force. Mars will be retrograding back into Cancer on January 6, 2025, so be sure to keep an eye on what arises in the Cancer-ruled house for you between September 4 and November 3. You’ll be revisiting many of these themes next year (January 6 - April 18, 2025).

But let’s back up a couple days and talk about the Virgo new moon on September 2. What I like about this lunation is that it spotlights Mercury, who stationed direct in Leo on August 28. Since Mercury is still moving pretty slowly, I expect this new moon to be much less productive than a typical Virgo lunation. Busy, yes, and I’m sure we’ll all be able to get things done, but there may be some delay and added stress due to Mercury’s current position in the sky. From what I’ve observed, Virgo lunations tend to bring a lot of attention to health and the physical body. Consuming foods that are harder on the digestive system while the Moon is in Virgo can cause tummy problems, especially if you have Virgo placements natally. I have a bad habit of becoming very anxious about health issues that would otherwise be nothing to worry about when planets are in Virgo. That said, I’d steer clear of any anxiety-inducing substances or situations, if possible, and try not to obsess over what’s not quite right, physically or otherwise. I like this new moon a lot for writing, researching, and organizing closets, but other than that, you may feel pretty scatter-brained.

We get our second lunation of the month on September 17, as a Pisces lunar eclipse. This is the first eclipse along the Virgo/Pisces axis, and while it’s only a partial eclipse, it’ll be foreshadowing some of the themes that will arise here once the nodes shift into these signs in January 2025. I’ll be making a separate post dedicated to the eclipse, but overall, it will be a time to consider the limitless opportunities in the Pisces-governed house in your birth chart. The biggest obstacle on this day will be the Moon’s close proximity to Saturn, which will put a damper on some of the hopefulness and idealism that this full moon/eclipse will activate.

Libra season kicks off by September 22, marking the official start of the fall season here in the northern hemisphere. This year’s Libra season will be more intense than usual, since we’re getting an eclipse in this sign in October, but the first half of the season shouldn’t be too bad, especially around the Sun-Mercury cazimi in Libra on September 30. The conjunction between the Sun and Mercury should bring some balance, clarity, and ease to how you navigate the nuances of the Libra-occupied house in your birth chart. You’ll notice this the most if you’re an Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn rising, since it’ll be happening in one of the angular houses in your chart. Sun-Mercury cazimis are incredibly common, but they can often signify good news, or the development of new, creative ideas! Personally, I think it’s a great way to end the month — especially as we move into October, which will come with some pretty intense astrology of its own. If you’d like to know how this month’s astrology will affect you personally, you can book a reading with me here. Happy (almost) fall!
